1&1 Web Hosting was founded 12 years ago with the vision of bringing new online and telecommunications technology to the masses. From those humble beginnings, 1&1 has evolved to become one of the most recognizable and reliable web technology providers in the market.
In 1998, 1&1 went public with their IPO which was a huge success. The company’s share price tripled within hours of the release and they continue to demonstrate strong growth, both financially and technologically.
Now serving over 3.5 million customers worldwide and approximately 2500 new customers every day, 1&1 has more than proven their capability in the field of web hosting.
Plans
Focusing solely on their shared hosting services, 1&1 certainly does not disappoint. These hosting plans come in two basic flavors: Standard Hosting (on a Linux platform), and MS Hosting for those who need ASP and Access databases.
The Standard Hosting packages are broken into three options: 1&1 Home, 1&1 Business, and 1&1 Developer. The 1&1 Home package, for $3.74 per month, comes complete with a domain name, 120 GB of disk storage, 1,200 GB of data transfer per month, one FTP account, and 200 POP3 email accounts. Support is offered for up to 10 subdomains. Unfortunately, no CGI, Perl, PHP, or MySQL is offered with this plan.
Moving up to the 1&1 Business plan, for $7.49 per month, 250GB of disk space, 2,500 GB of data transfer per month, 50 subdomains, and 500 POP3 email accounts are provided. Additionally, CGI, PHP, and Python support are added with a 100MB MySQL database, as well.
The 1&1 Developer plan runs $14.99 per month and includes all of the above, with some increases in space, bandwidth, and databases, plus server priority, a Perl Script Monitor and Syntax Checker, and a GeoTrust SSL certificate.
The MS Hosting plans have the same pricing scheme but offer Windows based functionality for ASP, FrontPage Extensions, and Access databases.
Reliability
With an investment of over $25 million in their data centers, one would expect 1&1 to have an incredibly reliable network. Four data centers located around the world support the huge and ever expanding customer base of this organization. With industry leading 18,000 megabit connectivity, there is no way your site will run out of bandwidth. Whether your site is simply an online photo album or a fully functional, massive e-commerce monster, this company has everything under control to keep it up and running at peak performance.
The data centers are monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by specialists. There are also over 150 permanently recording video cameras, safety locks, and many more security features employed the data centers to ensure that everything keeps going without a hitch.
1&1’s data centers have joined with major Internet exchange points, such as Yahoo, Lycos, LINX, and more than 500 other providers to make your website faster and more accessible.
All of this amounts to a high performance hosting solution and a guaranteed 99.9% uptime, which is a promise that is obviously easily delivered upon.
Support
Technical support is provided via toll free telephone number, email, the 1&1 Control Panel, and the Netviewer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Additionally, an FAQ section is provided to save you time on the simpler solutions.
Conclusion
1&1 has a long and proven track record and offers plenty of options at excellent prices. While it is unfortunate that the bottom level hosting plan does not include CGI, PHP, and MySQL support, it would seem more than worth the extra $5.00 per month to get that capability. Excellent customer support, high performance and reliability, and being a legacy in the industry make 1&1 a great choice.
